Module 1: Introduction to the course – FAQ (Day 1)

What is nature capital? Why do we need to account it? Does it need knowledge of economics and maths? Can I have an app for it? How will it help in my career?

Module 2: Concepts of Ecosystem Services (ESS) (Day 1)

Deliver the primary concepts in this course, Like ‘goods and services,’ ES classification, significance, Basic econometrics, and statistics.

Module 3: Valuation of Ecosystem Services (Day 2)

What is valuation, the difference between a price and a value, and various ways to derive a monetary estimate for different ecosystem services? Methodologies.

Module 4: Understanding the Normative Dimensions of Ecosystem Services (Day 2)

Contemporary norms and values of ES, and contemporary trends in social, cultural, political and economic policies. Concepts like ‘Willingness to Pay’. ‘Opportunity costs’ ‘Willingness to Compensate’

Module 5: Quantitative and Spatially-Explicit Assessment of Ecosystem Services (Day 3)

How to assess, monitor, model and predict the values of ES in space and time. Data interpretation, spatial data analysis, Scenario planning etc. importance of these for stakeholders, policy and decision-makers. Case studies.

Module 6: Mainstreaming Ecosystem Services into Decision-Making Process (Day 3)

How do governments (international, national, local) adopt such practices and then to implement the policy recommendations? Discussing challenges and constraints, synergies and trade-offs.

Module 7: Ecosystem Services Case Study (optional)/ Field visit (Day 4 & Day 5)

Assess a water /wetland-related ecosystem service (water yield). Introduction to machine learning – R Python, Q-GIS, InVEST etc.
